These four young males are the new dominant coalition in the western sector after having recently overthrown the Mapogo. They originate from the Southern Pride and were originally five, but one brother was killed by the Majingilane in 2011. Two brothers are older than the other two but it seems that one of the younger members is becoming the more dominant. They have secured the Ottawa pride already but have yet to dominate the Ximungwe pride.
This was the dominant coalition in the western sector of the Sabi Sands until March 2012 when the four Selati Males took over. It was lead by the oldest brother, Makhulu, and the coalition arrived from the east in 2005, originally consisting of six brothers which was most impressive. Over the years they lost four members, the most recent of which was been Sataan who was killed by the Selati Males in March 2012. The remaining two brothers, Makhulu and Skoro, are now nomadic to our east and their days are looking numbered.
Ximungwe Pride (Total = 8)
This pride consists of four adult females, two 15 month old cubs, one 13 month old cub and one 10 month old cub. They occupy the whole western sector concession and are the most viewed pride in this area. The pride has recently settled down and become more stable after all the females had cubs from the Mapogo. The pride is however under a lot of pressure from the new Selati Coalition who is looking to seek them out and kill the cubs.
Ottawa Pride (Total = 3)
This pride consists of three subadult females. There were two subadult males that are brothers to the subadult females but they recently left the pride to become independent. The pride was territorial over the northern parts of the concession but their territory has now expanded beyond our boundaries to the east so we do not see them as often as we would like. These are the only three offspring from the Mapogo to reach adulthood. One of the females did recently have four cubs but they were killed by the Selati Coalition during their take over.
